The Aurelian Union, commonly referred to simplu as the Union or Aurelia, is a federal republic composed of 14 self-governing regions and a federal district. The Union is the third largest country in the world by area, with 4.1 million square miles, and the third largest population, with over 590 million people. The capital is Aurelia, which also hold the title as the world's most populous city. Nine regions are spread throughout the Borealian continent with five being various island chains. The Union shares only one land border with the Republic of Etmala. The extremely diverse biomes and climates in the union made it one of the world 16 megadiverse countries.  Initially settled by First Peoples over 15,000 years ago, much of the Borealian contient remained untouched by humans until the Arrival. Aurelia emerged from a settlement of travelers escaping from a epidemic, famine, and war in their home country of the Kingom of Eridania. The settlers settled in an area that is today the capital city of Aurelia. The settlers remained unknown to the outside world until rediscovery by Sostian merchants. Numerous disputes occured between the Aurelians and the Sostians until the Emperor of Sostia ordered an attack on city. After a week of battle, Sostia seized and occupied the city for ten years, imposing new laws, taxes, and forced slave labor. The Aurelians declared independence from the Sostian Empire in 1698, leading to the War of Liberation. The war ended after only four years due to the invasion of Sostia from the former Jari-Yardinian Empire. The first rendition of the Path Papers was created in 1700, along with the Liberty Papers that guaranteed civil liberties for all Aurelian citizens forever. After contact with the First Peoples, who revered the Aurelians as children of a giant mythical bird, the Aurelians began rapid expansion out of the Crater and into Borealia. The Aurelians sought to integrate the First Peoples into their society, adopting many cultural traditions such as face paintaing and body tattooing along the way. With the usage of specially tasked scout groups called Pathfinders, the Aurelians settled new cities throughout the continent, many of which are named after their respective discoverers. During the second half of the 18th century, the First Civil War broke out after the Raya Region attempted to declare independence for itself. After a decisive victory by the Union, the Path Papers were amended to prevent regions from being able to exit the Union. By the end of the war, the Union spanned all the way to the west coast of the continent, with the modern day southern regions still being under the control of the Jari-Yardinian Empire. The Union began to grow rapidly economically and by population after the beginning of the Industrial Age. The War for the South, in which the Union sought to seize control over the Jari-Yardinian claim of the southern portion of the Borealian continent, set a precedent for the Union as a venerable military power. World War I began shortly after the Sostian invasion of the United States of Selonia. The Union emerged from World War II as a global superpower, being the first to develop and deploy nuclear weapons. After the second world war, the World Council was developed, with the Union becoming a permanent member. During the Silent War, the Space Race began between the Union and Sostian Empire, resulting in the 1941 moon landing, and the construction of the world's first space station. The Union stands as the world's foremost military, economic, and cultural power with the Sostian Empire falling second.  The Aurelian Union is the founding member of the World Council, World Bank, International Monetary Fund, Northern Oceans Treaty Act, and various other organizations. The Union is a highly developed country, with the world largest economy, accounting for nearly a quarter of the global lGDP. The Union's economy is the fastest growing west of the
